Internal quality control of blood components from the collection phase to fractionation in the Machala blood bank

Abstract

Background: blood banks have the mission of efficiently and timely preparing safe blood components from the blood of human beings through donation. The biosafety of these techniques constitutes an international priority. General objective: to analyze the internal quality control of blood components from the collection phase to fractionation in the Machala Blood Bank. Methodology: descriptive and retrospective study. 12,672 satisfactory donations that met quality standards were analyzed during the months of June 2022 to June 2023. The information was collected from analyzed and validated data provided by the institution, from all months in which quality control was carried out. Descriptive statistics were applied using the SPSS 27 program. Results: the blood components had a satisfactory compliance of 69.7%; non-compliant products with 30.3%; and the percentage of rejection based on immunohematological, serological and NAT tests was 1.97%. The highest level of compliance was the month of August 2022 with 82.6%; The highest percentage of non-conformities detected was in the month of April 2023 with 44.8%. Conclusions: the internal quality control of blood components was analyzed from the collection phase to fractionation in the Machala Blood Bank, which was satisfactorily completed.
