Abstract

The objective of this research is to document the influence of microbiological contamination of drinking water as the main cause of gastrointestinal diseases, establishing the sources of microbiological contamination of water, as well as the main gastrointestinal infectious pathologies associated with water contamination. The methodological framework includes a documentary design, through a systematic bibliographic search of full-text articles, published in the last 5 years, in journals indexed in the scientific databases and search engines PubMed, MEDLINE, Cochrane, Google Scholar, Scielo, Scopus, Redalyc, Elsevier and WOS, as well as official health web pages, selected under inclusion and exclusion criteria, using relevant keywords: "bacteria", "virus", "protozoa", "parasites", linked by the AND and OR connector with the terms water quality, drinking water, water pollution, water based diseases and pollution indicators. It is expected to demonstrate the sources of water contamination as well as the gastrointestinal problems that these cause in human health, in addition to educating and promoting the correct consumption of water in order to avoid diseases in the future, thus improving the health and quality of life of the population.
