Abstract

Introduction: The falls can be used as markers of a poor health and a function damaged and is often associated with a significant morbidity. To the extent that elderly is losing the capacities required to carry out the activities of daily life. Changes during the aging predispose to the older adult to the falls. Materials and methods: An observational study was conducted, analytical cross-sectional with a sample of 225 older adults of the parish Sidcay the city of Cuenca. A questionnaire was applied previously validated. The data were analyzed with the SPSS v. 15. Descriptive analysis was carried out using frequencies and percentages and graphics. The inferential analysis to determine the risk factors was done through the prevalence ratio with its confidence interval of 95%. It was considered statistically significant results to values of p<0.05.  Results: The study sample consisted of 225 older adults, most of them between the ages of 65-69 years, nearly half were widowed and had primary and level of education the prevalence of falls in older adults of the parish Sidcay is 47.6% (IC 95% 41,07 - 54,13). There was a statistically significant association with the sex, alcohol consumption, family situation, marital status, and occupation. Conclusions: The prevalence of falls in older adults of the parish Sidcay is high and is associated with the sex, alcohol consumption, family situation, marital status, and occupation.
