Abstract

Introduction: Advanced nursing practices in electroconvulsive therapy involve coordinated care among the health team. Nursing care before, during and after treatment is of vital importance to avoid the possible complications that may appear. Objective: To evaluate the competence of nurses in the management of patients with electroconvulsive treatment. Method: A quasi-experimental study was carried out at the Villa Clara Psychiatric Hospital during the first quarter of 2016. The study universe consisted of 52 nurses. A survey was applied to collect the information and after this the use of the informative and educational manual was implemented, reevaluating the aforementioned survey. Results: The female sex, the category of graduates and in care functions prevailed. The level of knowledge was evaluated as fair in the management of the patient with electroconvulsive treatment. Almost all have more than 5 years of experience in the specialty and there is a directly proportional relationship between this and the level of knowledge they present. After applying the informative and educational manual, the level of knowledge was satisfactory. Conclusions: An informative and educational manual was applied to the nursing staff, which positively modified the level of knowledge in the management of patients with electroconvulsive treatment.
