Abstract

Background: The disease caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) has become a world-wide public health problem. Several viral infections such as SARS, MERS, and influenza have been associated with adverse outcomes during pregnancy. Objective: to determine the symptoms and possible risks in pregnant women infected with SARS-CoV-2, as well as the complications in fetuses and newborns whose mothers were infected by the novel coronavirus. Methods: a literature review in English and Spanish was performed in order to retrieve information about the risks of COVID-19 during pregnancy. Data was retrieved from scientific publications available on the Web of Science, Cochrane, PubMed, and Scopus websites. Results: in pregnant patients, the first symptoms of COVID-19 were fever, cough, dyspnea, myalgia and fatigue; while headache, hemoptysis, diarrhea, and sputum were less common. The majority of studies found no evidence of vertical maternal-fetal transmission in pregnant women with COVID-19. Conclusions: Clinical findings in pregnant women with COVID-19 do not differ from non-pregnant patients, and pregnant women with COVID-19 do not have an increased risk of developing critical pneumonia compared to non-pregnant women. Although there is no evidence of vertical infection in babies, maternal infection can cause serious problems such as preterm labor and fetal distress.
